In this example setup, the FIRE target comes to about $900,000. At this savings rate you could reach it around age 64. Stopping work at 50, the money runs low around age 64, so leave a safety margin.
These figures use this scenario’s example starting numbers — adjust the calculator above for your own situation.
Because part-time income covers part of your costs, the expenses you ask your portfolio to fund are lower — which shrinks your target and pulls your exit date forward. Model it by entering only the spending your investments must cover, not your total budget. The gap between the two is what your part-time work needs to earn. This is often the most realistic path for people who want out of full-time work without a giant nest egg.
Who it fits: people who don't want full retirement but do want out of full-time, high-stress work — and who value benefits like health insurance that a part-time job can provide. The portfolio only has to cover the gap.
Watch out for: the durability of your part-time income and benefits. If that work dries up, the plan leans entirely on a portfolio that wasn't sized for full expenses. Keep your covered-by-portfolio number honest.
