Coast FIRE Calculator

Coast FIRE is the moment your invested money is enough that compounding alone — with no further saving — will reach your retirement goal. This scenario starts with a larger balance and minimal saving to show how coasting works.

What this scenario works out to

In this example setup, the FIRE target comes to about $1,200,000. At this savings rate you could reach it around age 64. Stopping work at 65, the money comfortably outlasts age 95.

These figures use this scenario’s example starting numbers — adjust the calculator above for your own situation.

Reading your coast FIRE result

Once you hit your coast number, you only need to cover current expenses; your existing investments grow into your retirement target on their own. The chart shows whether your current balance, left to grow, gets there by your target age. If it does, you can stop saving aggressively and redirect that money to living now. If it falls short, you have not quite reached coast yet — keep contributing until the projection clears your goal.

Who it fits: people who front-loaded their investing early and now want to ease off — switch to a lower-paid but enjoyable job, go part-time, or simply stop stressing about the savings rate while still covering today's bills.

Watch out for: relying on a single optimistic return. Coast maths is sensitive to the rate you assume; a weak decade early on can leave you short. Recheck the projection every few years and resume saving if it slips below target.

Common questions

What is Coast FIRE?
It is the point where your invested assets, with no new contributions, will grow to your retirement number by your target age. You still work to cover today's bills, but you no longer need to save.
How do I calculate my coast number?
Take your future FIRE target and discount it back to today at your expected return. If your current balance already exceeds that, you have reached Coast FIRE.
Can I really stop saving at Coast FIRE?
For retirement, yes — assuming returns hold. Many people keep a small buffer anyway, since a weak market run early on can knock a coast plan off track.
