In this example setup, the FIRE target comes to about $2,400,000. At this savings rate you could reach it around age 59. Stopping work at 55, the money runs low around age 92, so leave a safety margin.
These figures use this scenario’s example starting numbers — adjust the calculator above for your own situation.
A fat FIRE target is large because every extra dollar of annual spending adds roughly 25 dollars to the number you need. That makes savings rate and time your main levers. The chart will likely show a later FIRE age than a lean plan at the same income — the trade-off for not cutting back. If the date is too far out, decide which matters more: the lifestyle, or retiring sooner.
Who it fits: high earners who want to keep a comfortable lifestyle in retirement and would rather work a few more years than cut back. It also suits those with variable big-ticket spending — travel, family support, healthcare.
Watch out for: how fast the target grows. Every extra unit of annual spending adds 25 to the number, so lifestyle creep pushes the date out quickly. Decide what spending is truly non-negotiable before locking in the target.
