What this scenario works out to

In this example setup, the FIRE target comes to about $1,200,000. At this savings rate you could reach it around age 49. Stopping work at 45, the money runs low around age 71, so leave a safety margin.

These figures use this scenario’s example starting numbers — adjust the calculator above for your own situation.

Reading your 10-year FIRE result

Reaching FIRE in a decade is driven almost entirely by savings rate, not investment returns — there simply is not enough time for compounding to dominate. The well-known guidance is that a ~65% savings rate puts FIRE roughly 10 years away from a standing start. If the chart says you fall short, the honest levers are saving more, spending less in retirement, or accepting a slightly longer timeline. Raising the return assumption to force a fit only hides the risk.

Who it fits: high earners early in a windfall or peak-earning decade who can save 60%+ of income, or people who already have a substantial head start. It rewards a short, intense push more than a long, gentle one.

Watch out for: leaning on returns to make the timeline work. Over ten years your savings rate dominates, so an optimistic return number just hides the risk. If the maths is tight, extend the timeline rather than the assumptions.

Common questions

What savings rate do I need to retire in 10 years?
Roughly 60–70% of income from a standing start, per the classic Mr. Money Mustache maths. Existing savings shorten that requirement.
Is FIRE in 10 years realistic?
For high earners who can save most of their income, yes. For average earners it usually takes longer unless spending is very low. The calculator shows your personal timeline.
Does investment return matter for a 10-year plan?
Less than you think. Over a short horizon your savings rate dwarfs returns. Do not lean on optimistic return numbers to make 10 years work.
